[Rayne Harrison] Jedi is Umbra, as it is her turn to patrol Umbrally, in Crinos, and gliding from rooftops to rooftop via Patagia.
[Hatchet] Echo and Joey are on realmside patrols tonight. Daniel and Charlie were instructed to go through the Umbra. The pack no longer does solo patrols, not since their numbers swelled. Hatchet almost never tells them when to go, or where, or how. Sometimes he does. Tonight he did.
And tonight, when Charlie and Daniel set out, he was there to go with them, stepping sideways with Charlie's greater spiritual strength opening the way for all of them. He is in hispo, stalking along in a heavy form with fur like rusted iron. His breath steams out of his nostrils as he walks ahead of Charlie and Daniel, tail twitching every so often.
[Broken Hammer] Broken Hammer, flanking, matches his Alpha's form, though otherwise there's little in common between the two wolves. The Forseti is lean and rangy, long-legged, narrow, with fur in dappled grey and brown and black and white. Hispo is too powerful a form for most Garou to trot easily in, but Broken Hammer manages, loping along at a good clip that he could probably maintain for miles and miles on end.
[Lights Out] Charlie hadn't been back from whatever it was he was doing at the Caern tonight for very long before Hatchet informed the two males living in the room that they were to be going on patrols in the Umbra tonight. It looked as though he had just gotten in, was slinging his book bag onto his made bed when the Philodox had informed them, either in person or over the connection they share, what the evening's plan was. He'd had to stop to put his boots on. Wherever he was tonight, he had gone barefoot.
He remained in his human skin up until his brothers had crossed the Gauntlet with his holding the way open, and once all three of the Sentinels' males were on the other side, he'd followed Hatchet's lead and morphed into his dire wolf form. Lights Out so rarely acquires this form that it might take a moment to reconcile what the others are looking at. He's muscular rather than sickly-looking, covered in night-black fur, his eyes as dark as coal. He falls in behind Hatchet, at Broken Hammer's left side, muzzle to the ground and eyes on the area around them.
[the madness] The hounds of Gaia are not the only creatures out patrolling the city tonight. It helps that they're on the alert, ears swiveling this way and that, noses twitching for foreign scents. It helps that on some level they're prepared for conflict.
They all hear it. The Sentinels have a moment to comment amongst themselves across the totem link they share. Electronic Jedi, on her solitary patrol, hears it first. It's coming from beneath her. Behind her.
Ears snap to attention, muzzles raise from the Umbral streets, as a strange and erratic click click clicking is heard. It's not quite the near rhythmic slap of a baseball card slipped into the spokes of a child's bicycle. No, it's more like the tap of fingernails on a marble counter top. It's maddening, that sound. As it grows louder, it raises hackles, makes skin twitch, ears flick back to get away from that horrible sound.
They appear from around the umbral reflection of a building. There are five at first. Part hound part...something else. Their bodies are encased in hard, bony armored carapices. They stop when they see the three dire wolves. One takes a cautious step forward, head cocking to the side, like a curious dog.
Suddenly the quintet is sprinting forward, toward the Sentinels who are on the ground. When they're just a few feet from meeting the Garou's fangs, two leap into the air, and dive into the ground, disappearing.

[the madness] The Sentinels meet three of the Ooralath head on. Immediately, the trackers begin falling under the superior tactics of a superior pack. Daniel slips behind one, intending to hold it in place so his brother's can attack with greater advantage, but the hard carapice is difficult to get a hold on. Changing tactics, Hatchet orders his packmates to rip the armor from the beasts, and at first, it works. One of the hounds falls to the ground, twitching, not yet dead but still useless. The two that slipped into the earth leap out behind the Garou and do...nothing. They simply sit and watch and wait.
The Sentinels begin ripping at another carapice, but to little use. First Charlie, then Daniel try to rip the armor from a hound. Broken Hammer dives, and misses the beast entirely, his claws sinking into the flank of his alpha instead. No doubt he will pay for his lack of finesse later, when the wolves have finished their duty here and returned to The Brotherhood to celebrate their victory.
Meanwhile, Electronic Jedi, watching from above, joins the fray. She leaps from the umbral reflection of a fire escape, just solid enough to support her weight, and lands square on the back of one of the monsters. When its on its feet once more, the Crinos Ragabash reaches her massive handpaws around, grips the thing's mouth, and tears away the jaw bone. For a moment it stands there, stunned, tongue lolling and dripping in blood.
The hounds focus on the Fenrir, whose strength is shown when he very nearly tore out the throat of one of the beasts. They harry the mottled grey dire wolf, biting and clawing at him until finally one lifts up on its hind legs, and slashes out at the Fenrir. Daniel feels the pull of claws in his flesh, but oddly there's no pain. This is nothing new to the Philodox, who until recently was so very much alone. There's nothing new about flying into battle and waking from frenzy to discover new blemishes on his skin. When the frenzy eventually fades, Daniel will find yet another new testament to his tenacity, his desire to stay alive to fight the Wyrm another day. The evidence will lie in the claw marks that dug into his shoulder and worked their way very near to the center of his chest. For now, however, the Fenrir rages to live, and sends his killer to its grave.
But his packmates, not quite his friends but his brothers, felt the flicker on the totem link. They knew, for one brief second, that one of their number might not return home from battle tonight. That there would be one glass left empty for the victory toast. It only lasts a fraction of an instant. This is war, this is battle. It would not be the first time either Sentinel watched a packmate fall never to rise again. There's a spark, a flare of rage, and they're in the battle again. Slashing and clawing and ripping through the hounds until finally, three are down.

[Rayne Harrison] Once the fray is done, Rayne shifts down to homid, and takes out her awakened phone, and snaps a pic of the uglies. "I'll take a souvenior to the wyrmpole for all of us."
[Lights Out] With one of the three males in a berserker rampage befitting his tribe, the fight does not last much longer after the Forseti has dragged himself back from the edge of death. One bite from the wild-eyed beast has the fourth Ooralath crumpling to the ground in a heap of armor; a second from the Alpha of the pack dispatches the fifth.
Those that have departed this plane leave behind their armor, shining and unholy. Two lay in a state of incapacitated stasis, their necks exposed, their spirits wavering. Lights Out is, once again, strapped with more Rage than his self-control is able to keep tabs on, and his spiritual awareness was drained earlier this evening as well. He is the only Sentinel without his own blood on his fur and skin. Broken Hammer's is on his left paw. A moment after the battle has ended, the Fury crosses to his brother and brings that same stained paw to his wounds, working against his drained Rage to knit his flesh together again.

[Hatchet] It's not terribly surprising that Hatchet is bleeding after all that. There's a raking claw mark across one shoulder, another wound on his side. He's not breathing heavily. He's not panting, tongue lolling. He's not wincing, or limping. Daniel bears fresh scar tissue from what those things did to him; Charlie is untouched. Hatchet is barely hurt.
He's stepping onto the barley-breathing Ooralaths, breaking their necks in quick succession, when he feels a rush of cold air, smells -- briefly -- cinnamon. He turns his head and finds Charlie there, resting a paw on his fur, and Hatchet chuffs a breath out.
He shifts to homid then, looking to Rayne, and chuckles quietly at her snapping a photo. "Thanks," he says, but then his attention is going back to Charlie. "I would have been fine," is all he says, although he says it quietly, and not across their link.
Then Daniel. A sharp whistle. "Hey! You sane again yet?"
[Lights Out] The dire wolf chuffs irritably when Hatchet tells him he would have been fine, and then burns through some of his Rage to force himself back into his human skin. His left hand is coated in blood. He looks down at it, as if surprised that it is not his own, then wipes his palm off across his jeans as he asks Hatchet, "Would you let me walk around hurt after getting attacked by Banes?"
An angry, dark red streak appears in his hand's wake, and he ducks down near one of the Ooralath to start plucking scales from its armor.
[Rayne Harrison] "Ewan doesn't believe I do half the shit I do. Now I have the proof." Holding up the camera. She looked over to Dan, then started getting the trophies for the wyrmpole. "He gonna be ok, ~Rhya?"
[Hatchet] "You," Hatchet points out calmly, which is not hard, given that he hasn't a drop of rage left burning in his veins, "are the only Theurge we have. You are the only one of us who can heal more than once, who can speak directly to our totem, or who can do shit like summon the fucking Triptych -- oh yeah, I heard about that -- so it's a bit more of a threat to the pack at large if you get hurt.
"Also," he goes on, as Charlie starts pulling scales off, since he loves to lecture, "I know my limits." Then, because they're in mixed company, the rest of that sentence echoes across the totemlink.
[Hatchet] I don't believe you know yours. Yet.
to Broken Hammer, Lights Out
[Lights Out] Something's clearly bothering Charlie as he pulls scales off of the Ooralath's armor, but he does not avert his gaze, purposefully or out of deference, when Hatchet addresses him. He looks up, occasionally glancing down to ensure that his fingers are finding their mark, though his eyes are hard and his jaw is set.
Whatever he says in response to his Alpha's speech, Obsidian Data's Ragabash isn't privy to it.
[Rayne Harrison] Rayne tilted her head, pretty sure it was all totem talk now. "Rhya? Do you need me to do anything before I take these to the Caern?"
[Lights Out] [OOC: Dorn is retarded and only clicked on Hatchet!]
Why do you think I don't know mine?
to Broken Hammer, Hatchet
[Hatchet] "Nope," he says to Rayne, watching Charlie. A slow blink, then he turns and smiles at the Glass Walker. "Thank you. We'll cleanse the area."
[Rayne Harrison] A smile and a nod. "ANytime, Hatchet~rhya. If you ever need help, just holler." And with that, she turned, taking the bone armor she grabbed, and headed out towards the Caern.
[Broken Hammer] Death itself took Broken Hammer and spat him back out. The Frenzy that comes with that, bloody and instantaneous, doesn't let go of the Fenrir easily.
Long after the last of the ooralaths are dead, long after the rest of his pack are calmly discussing strengths and weaknesses and limits, long after collection of trophies has begun -- long, long after all is said and done, the Forseti is still tearing at one of the disintegrating carcasses, seizing it in his teeth, shaking it and rattling it and gnashing it in his jaws.
The thing is dead. That's apparently not enough for Broken Hammer. Growling, snarling terribly, the beast that Broken Hammer has become reduces the remnants to pieces, to scraps, to shreds. It's startling, how much fury is in the lean, unassuming Forseti whose posture, mannerisms and behavior otherwise all but suggests an omega wolf. When nothing is left of the ooralath he's fallen upon but shrapnel, the bristling hispo finally stops.
His four paws are planted wide. His head is low, jaws open, running with slaver. Slowly, the growls subside; the blazing, blind light in his eyes fade. When he's breathing quietly again, the Forseti blinks once, then shakes like a dog out of water.
He turns to look at his packmates. And at Rayne. And then back again.
[Hatchet] Their Alpha waits until Rayne is out of earshot before he speaks again. He waits until Daniel has stopped ripping apart one of the ooralaths. He waits until the still-shapeshifted wolf has started to breathe a little more normally and until Charlie has finished pulling scales off the beast before he says anything else.
Then, irritation punctuating every few words: "Chuck, is there a goddamned word out of my mouth that hasn't upset you off since I came back? Because I am sick to fuck of your hyper-fucking-defensive questioning of everything I say to you. I want to know what the hell your problem is."
But he doesn't wait. "You want to know why I assume you're distracted by your jealousy over Joey? Because you are. You want to know why I don't believe you know your limits? Because you burn your spirit and your will out long before you use the Rage you have in you, and you do this on a constant goddamn basis. Because you wait until your wounds are already taxing you before you call on the gift Bear taught you. Because you don't fucking eat enough, you scrawny little shit. Why don't I think you know your limits? Because you keep showing me."
[Lights Out] Charlie plucks perhaps six scales off of the thing's armor, then sets them down on the ground and stands up, his knees popping as he does so, shucking his book bag off of his sharp shoulders and unzipping it to produce a bladder of sand. By that time, Rayne has gone, and the conversation that had briefly halted comes back.
A further distillation of his nickname comes out of Hatchet's mouth, followed by a barrage of questions that he doesn't wait for him to answer. The Theurge does open his mouth to answer the first one that comes out of his mouth, then promptly shuts it with a click of teeth when he keeps going. He drops his beaten-to-Hell book bag on the ground with a crumpling thump and crosses his arms over his chest, but doesn't interrupt.
He isn't stoned tonight, doesn't carry the heavy stench of marijuana smoke and the giddiness that comes with it like he had last night, but his gaze isn't any lighter than it was last night when he collected himself after an attack of cataplexy in the common room. There's more intelligence in his eyes than there is when he's been smoking.
His brow furrows and his eyes squint as he considers what's just been said. He sighs. He tightens his grip on the bladder in his left hand. For a moment it looks as though he's going to do what he did the last time Hatchet laid a sizable chunk of speech before him and excuse himself. They're not realmside, though. The police are not en route and there are no human witnesses. They have time.
"Can I say something?" he asks, without malice or even anger in his voice. His Rage is just barely held in check tonight, but he doesn't appear rankled by what Hatchet has just said to him.
[Broken Hammer] Broken Hammer missed out on the earlier totem conversation. He doesn't miss out on Hatchet's litany of questions. He doesn't miss out on Charlie's response.
The hispo licks his chops once, then settles on his haunches to watch. He looks expectant. He looks a little perplexed, also.
[Hatchet] The highly expressive, intensely sarcastic Philodox throws up his hands in response to Charlie's question. "I don't know," he snaps, and drops his arms. "But let's try it."
[Lights Out] He hadn't appeared confused before, but that is what comes over his expression as he watches Hatchet throw up his hands and tell him he doesn't know if he can say something. For maybe ten heartbeats the Theurge remains silent, watching Hatchet as though he's not entirely sure what to make of his declaration, and then he reaches up the hand not holding the bladder of sand to rub at the end of his nose with the back of his index finger one two three times, sniff, and recross his arms.
"I ask questions because I like, don't know how to read people's minds, and sometimes I don't understand what people are saying to me. My English ain't so hot. I like to clarify before I respond sometimes. I ain't doing it because..." He frowns again, and then goes on, "I don't even know what hyper-fucking-defensive questioning means."
[Broken Hammer] The Forseti -- who a moment ago was quite beyond reason, and a moment before that was quite dead -- suddenly snaps at the air. It's an abrupt, savage motion, a sharp clap of his teeth together.
"Why so much pointless talk? Answer your Alpha's question, mule. Why do you question him?"
[Hatchet] If they were not coming off of battle, if Hatchet had not ripped through every last reserve of fury in his bones and then some, his reaction to Charlie right now would be very different. Then again, it could be said that no matter what the day, no matter what the circumstance, Hatchet is... unpredictable. He sleeps alone in his room now, so no one stirs in the middle of the night to find him staring at empty air, speaking to people who aren't there. He keeps no schedule of waking and sleeping.
He has a temper regardless of the phase of the moon, regardless of his rage. He throws himself into everything, it seems, regardless of its worth. He is about to reply to Charlie, exhaling through his teeth, when Daniel speaks up.
Hatchet whips his head around so fast to look at the other Half Moon it's a shock to find him wearing his human skin. His tone is as flat as a board, hard as a strike across the face. "Broken Hammer, if you call him that, then you will call me charach, Joey a barren waste, Echo urrah, and yourself oathbreaker." The edge in his words relents somewhat, his tone lowering. Almost softening. "Not a one of us is not an outcast to our people. Charlie is one of the only ones who is so by birth and not foolishness, mistake, or choice."
Exhaling, this time not between clenched teeth, he turns back to Charlie. And frowns. "Now what the fuck was I saying?" A scowl. He glares at the sky for a moment, then looks back to the Fury, snapping his fingers and pointing. "Right." Drops his hand. "Fuck's sake, Chuck, you have the wisdom of a Fostern. I left you in charge of this pack while I was gone, and you're standing there asking me if you can say something? Have I or have I not been yelling at you since day one to speak the fuck up? Christ, even Curata was pushing you to do it. Do you want to be treated like the fucking Omega of this pack? You sure as hell act like one half the time."
[Broken Hammer] The hispo, whose coat and color speaks very little of the tribe to which he belongs, cocks his head toward his Alpha. He waits for a beat of silence. It's not for effect. It's to be certain there was space for him to answer at all.
Then, "That is exactly what we are, Rhya, but not all that we are. When you act as Alpha, I will call you that. When I act as a true child of Fenris, that is what I will call myself.
"Lights Out is acting like a mule. Cringing, mewling, belly to ground. When he stops, I stop."
[Lights Out] Broken Hammer interjects, sandwiching an order between two questions, and the Cliath who might have been a Fostern after tonight if he had shown the ability to overcome a weakness that he is clearly aware of looks sharply over at him. His nostrils flare with a snarled-out exhalation, but he does not speak. It's questionable whether he would have even if Hatchet had not not spoken up in his defense, in defense of all of them in a way. What he says is true: Charlie is the only one of them who was born into his shame. He has been carrying it with him since his mother first became aware of his presence, and unless he dies in Chicago it's entirely possible that whatever deeds he dies with will be obliterated by the fact that he is going to be buried in his war form.
Chicago is the first place where anyone has ever said to him, in more or less words, that his opinion was wanted and if he didn't start giving it then nothing more was going to be expected of him than what he could give the pack. Earlier this evening, Hatchet's words turned out to be somewhat prophetic.
The Forseti continues talking, and though the Theurge's Rage flares, he does not act on it. He waits until Hatchet finds his place in the previous conversation, and then he turns back to his Alpha, bristling but not as he was in the park the other day: that is, barely human. He is not twitching and glowering and barely in control of himself. There's some semblance of humanity left in him right now, his will to go on not quite so drained as it was the last time the entire pack was together.
When Hatchet says he sure as hell acts as like the Omega half the fucking time, a darkness sweeps over the Theurge's already black gaze as if the moonlight has just been blotted out of his portion of the Umbra. His gaze drops to the heap of armor resting on the earth between them, and he reaches up to scratch at his gaunt cheek. When he looks back up, he says, "I challenged Gossamer Wing-rhya for Fostern tonight. I thought I was ready, but she failed me 'cause she says I'm a doormat. I don't know how else to act. Yeah, I could ask for help figuring out how to change, but I don't know how to ask for help, neither. So..."
[Hatchet] Daniel makes a good point. And Hatchet doesn't argue with him. He doesn't tell him to shut up, or that it's not the point of this. He listens, staring at Broken Hammer, and the fact that he does not repeat his aggravation with Charlie being called a mule may be the strongest indicator that, at least in part, he agrees.
He looks at the Theurge. Who has been acting like a mule. Like an omega wolf.
The Half-Moons of the pack tell him the truth. The Ragabashes question and push him. All together, the Sentinels sat with Charlie in the park the other night and agreed -- whether silently or out loud -- that Charlie needs some fucking help. The difficulty is, one of Charlie's main problems is his inability to ask for it, or even see it for what it is when it's offered.
Something like that.
Charlie tells him something he didn't know, but Hatchet doesn't suddenly blink in shock. He tips his head slightly to the side and listens, staring at the overthin Black Fury with a pale gaze that seems utterly merciless, utterly detached, even when he's looking at someone he sometimes appears to care for.
"You are a doormat," he says. "You're easily offended, you assume hatred and disdain where there is none, you mistake discipline and correction for punishment and abuse, and you exhaust yourself when you don't have to. You have absolutely no idea how to maintain a balance between your spirit, your rage, and your control. And since you seem to expect to be stepped on, you act defensive all the fucking time."
There's a beat. "Now, I actually get that. This whole thing where your packmates want to hear what you have to say is very new." There's sarcasm there. It doesn't completely mask the sincerity of what he's saying. "I understand it might be confusing to know you need to speak up and then get snarled at for what you have to say."
Another pause. He exhales. "But get over it. You want to know how to ask for help, or how to change, or how to stop acting the way you act? Most of it is just... get the fuck over it, Charlie."
He walks towards a corpse and then beckons for Charlie's backpack, for the stuff inside that will let them cleanse the bodies and the area. "Asking for help isn't something you need to learn how to do. It's something you just do. It's actually not that complicated." He frowns at the ooralaths. Doesn't look up. "I'm sorry to hear you failed your challenge."
Hatchet glances at Charlie, still frowning. "You're a good Theurge, Chuck. Do you even realize that much?"
[Lights Out] For the second time tonight, Charlie opens his mouth to contest something that Hatchet has said only to close his mouth when it becomes apparent that that isn't all that is to be addressed tonight.
The first time that Hatchet told Charlie that he wanted to hear what he had to say, it had seemed as though the Theurge had actually listened to him, retained what was said to him, and acted on it. There were times after that conversation, the night three males had sat down in the common room of the Brotherhood to discuss who would be leading the as-yet to be formed pack, when he initiated conversations or made suggestions about courses of action to be taken or showed some semblance of a backbone. Then Curata and Hatchet both left, putting Charlie in charge of a pack two bodies deep, and that pack swelled to five, and something seems to have changed.
He offers no explanations for why it is that he acts the way he acts, and none are requested. There is sarcasm, there is a decree to get the fuck over his hang-ups from a man who previously chastised him for not asking for help, and then there is a gesture for Charlie's book bag. The lavender thing, several years old and wearing every month of its life in stains and stitched-up tears, remains on the ground. Charlie just abandons his crossed-armed stance, glancing away to shuck open the bladder in his hand, and starts to walk the widdershins circle around the cluster of tainted armor, allowing crystals of sand to fall to the Umbral ground as he goes.
This ritual requires his concentration and the participation of those around them. He splits his attention, unevenly, between completing the conversation with his Alpha and cleansing the area of the blight that has fallen at their feet.
He looks up when he feels the weight of Hatchet's gaze on him, and whereas before Charlie had been the one frowning, it's the Fostern who wears that heavy expression now. Charlie's face is all but blank, now. His shoulders have not sloped this entire time, and he has not lowered his gaze out of cowed submission this entire time. It is not defeat that is keeping him quiet. He is not offended. He does not believe he's being punished.
He's had a long night, and it's not over yet.
"Yeah," he says. His tone is heavy with words unspoken, though, a but that he doesn't voice.
[Broken Hammer] Broken Hammer is sharply perceptive, as keen as a hound. Or a razor. He notes the spike in the Theurge's rage, and does not shy from it. He looks at Lights Out directly, meets the almost-Fostern's eyes unfalteringly if they turn his way. That he considers himself dominant to Charlie is by now obvious, and growing more indisputable in his mind by the moment. For what it's worth, though, it's a matter-of-fact sort of dominance; no malice or abuse held within.
There's an order in every pack. Broken Hammer knows that with an instinctive understanding normally reserved to those born to the wolf form.
Silent now, he looks from one packmate to the other, and back. When Charlie begins the Rite of Cleansing -- something that he understands now is the Theurge's job in this pack, and not his -- Broken Hammer remains where he is, sitting on his haunches. When he answers with a single word, everything else in the undertone, the Forseti's ears stand upright.
In lupine forms, Broken Hammer's eyes lighten drastically to a pale tawny hue, brilliant gold in some lighting, resonant amber in others. They're alert to the point of wariness, and fix firmly on the Cleansing theurge.
"Lights Out, do you want to be omega?" There's no censure in the question.
[Lights Out] Does he want to be Omega.
A sign of wisdom is thinking before doing anything, be it speaking or acting, giving advice or leaping into the fray. Lights Out has the Wisdom and Glory of a Fostern, earned the right to stand before one who has attained the rank and challenge her for the chance to ascend, and he was not failed because he has no skill in making talens or cleansing, because he refuses to heal in battle or because he lacks the ability to effectively negotiate with and perform chiminage to spirits. He was failed because he either cannot or will not stand up for himself.
What he can and does do is think before he opens his mouth, more often than not. There are times when he forgets his place and says things that he ought to have kept to himself, but it's a fair enough assumption that if one is coming to Lights Out for advice, he is going to give all the consideration that it's due before he comes to any sort of conclusion.
So when Broken Hammer asks him his question and Charlie does not immediately answer, it's not because he's being petulant, or because he's annoyed, or because he just wants to get the cleansing over with so he can go home. It's because he's thinking about it. Either of the males looking at him can see his brow stitched in though, his eyes aiming inward as he considers either the question itself or how he's going to respond to it. He's completed the circle of sand by the time he comes to a halt and looks back at the Forseti.
"No," he says.
[Hatchet] Most of the Sentinels can Cleanse. All of them, thanks to their totemic patron, can heal. They are all stronger than their bodies actually allow. Often they work this rite together, two or more, but Daniel does not step in to help Charlie tonight. Neither does Hatchet. He remains silent as the Theurge begins the rite, stepping out of the way.
His eyes flick at Daniel when he asks this question, though. His tone, his lack of judgement, reminds Hatchet of asking Wahya if he wanted to die.
The Fostern looks upward, arms crossing loosely over his chest. For now, all he does is listen.
[Broken Hammer] "Good." Broken Hammer's ears relax a notch. His tail thumps once on the ground. "Neither do I. Not because there is shame in it, because there isn't. Every pack must have an Omega just as it must have an Alpha. The Alpha leads with his strength. The Omega keeps his packmates strong by striving to better them. The Omega that allows himself to sink permanently to that position is weak, and does his pack a disservice.
"Neither of us will be weak. So none of our packmates will be complacent."
The Fenrir rises to his feet, feet braced apart, ready -- for combat, for facedown, for whatever Lights Out might choose.
"Now, brother, prove to me that you're strong."
[Hatchet] His eyebrows cock upward as Daniel speaks, and he lowers his chin, looking at the Forseti. "Is it your opinion that every pack needs a Beta, too, Broken Hammer?"
He pauses, but the question may as well be rhetorical, because he then adds another one: "Who do you think is the Omega of this pack, since you insist there 'must' be one?"
[Broken Hammer] The Forseti pauses -- "No. A Beta is only necessary if the Alpha has some weakness that needs compensation."
And, a pause.
"I am Omega. But now I am challenging Lights Out."
[Lights Out] Neither of the older males helps Charlie with the ritual, and he does not ask them to. Once that sand circle has been deposited on the ground, he pauses. This is where the howl belongs, where that low mournful sound meant to frighten away the tainted spirits ought to go. That is not what is happening now. The three of them are not lifting their voices together to shoo away the darkness that is riding the armor they intend to take back with them.
There is talk, still. Charlie cants his head to the side when Broken Hammer speaks, blindly cinching the bladder of sand and tying it tight so that it will not spill inside of his bag, but he does not step forward to do as he is being urged to. Hatchet speaks up, and the Theurge scratches at his sternum as he waits for a response.
[Hatchet] "Who made you Omega?" Hatchet inquires.
[Broken Hammer] A tilt of his head. "I am newest to this pack, except for Echo. And she is Fostern. So I am Omega."
[Hatchet] "Have you been acting like an Omega?" he goes on, in that same light, curious tone of voice. "Have you been treated like the Omega?"
[Broken Hammer] "I have deferred to you, End Transmission, and Laughs in the Face of Death, and my deference has been accepted. I will defer to Lights Out if he bests me." He shifts now, facing Hatchet more directly. "What are you getting at, Alpha?"
[Hatchet] The Fianna shrugs. "I'm not necessarily 'getting at' anything," he says, shoulders dropping. He moves into a crouch, which puts him below eye level with Daniel, resting his elbows on his thighs and holding his balance on the balls of his feet with unsettling ease. "I do have another question, though: if I defer to you at some point, because some judgement of yours is sound or some point you make is wiser than my own, does that make me the Omega of this pack?"
[Broken Hammer] "No. But it's your prerogative to take or ignore my counsel. It's not mine to take or ignore yours."
[Hatchet] "In that case," Hatchet says mildly, "it's not up to you to decide that this pack 'must' have an Omega, nor for you to determine who that is. All of my packmates strive against their own weaknesses. All of my packmates push one another to better themselves. If I choose a Beta, it is because if something should happen to me that we cannot prepare for, all of you need to know who to look to for leadership without so much as a moment of confusion on the matter. If I choose a Beta, it is not because I need compensation, but because the pack needs one."
He cracks his neck, exhaling heavily before getting back to his feet. "If you challenge Lights Out to prove his strength somehow to you, so be it. But do it as your duty to your packbrother, not as the duty of an Omega wolf." There's a pause, and a matching frown. "We're only part wolf, Daniel. I will not acknowledge or condone a hierarchy in my pack that calls one of you the least of all of us."
[Broken Hammer] The Forseti's ears flatten back against his skull, a gesture of caution and anxiety. He's silent for a long time, warring internally, before he answers again.
"Alpha, I have to speak against you. I don't believe there can be true equals in a pack. Who stands first and who stands last may change from day to day, moment to moment, but it is our nature -- it is my nature to respect a hierarchy. I also don't believe to be last is to be least, or weak."
[Hatchet] Charlie may very well have fallen asleep by this point. It would not be the first time a member of another auspice has had to listen to two Half-Moons hashing out a matter and discovered that paint drying is of more interest. One of them, at least, is so calm right now it's as though he never has the rage they both know he carries on his shoulders most of the time.
Then again, it's the first time either of them have seen Hatchet look like he's enjoying himself without the blood of a Wyrm-minion coating his claws and throat. He doesn't look overly thrilled or amused with the conversation, but there's a level of investment and interest in this that is rarely there for the detached-seeming man. He's not irritated. He's not angry. He's not frustrated. He's not dismissive.
He's just talking.
"I didn't say equals," he corrects, almost gently. "I said brothers. Nor did I say their is no hierarchy in this pack apart from the leadership of the Alpha. But I have not determined a Beta, nor a Gamma or Omega in this pack because I don't believe the Sentinels need an Omega any more than they need a Beta right now."
He frowns slightly. "Being newest does not make you last any more than Charlie's breed makes him last. And just because your deferring is accepted does not mean it should be given."
There's a point there. He's not saying it aloud. But it's possible that Daniel -- it's possible that Charlie, listening to all this -- is learning that half of what Hatchet thinks never makes it into words. Sometimes it's as though he's winking, and they're left to interpret why.
[Lights Out] [This is the part where Dorn goes to bed before she passes out on the keyboard. Charlie's gonna keep listening until they're done talking and then finish the cleansing. If Daniel still wants his challenge after they're done talking he'll have to wait! *L* Night!]
[Broken Hammer] Broken Hammer's head tilts again. The Forseti seems wholly at home in this form; there have been those that mistook him for a lupus or, to their grief, a metis. Then his ears come upright once more. He barks, a single, short sound. "Understood, Alpha."
And that's it. The dappled direwolf gets to his feet, shaking his fur out. He looks to Hatchet to see where they would patrol next.
[Hatchet] The vast majority of Garou in North -- and South -- America are born in homid. In most areas there's more likely to be metis than lupus. Hatchet was still a cub when he met his first wolf-born Garou, and that werewolf had been Changed for so long that she could pretend humanity better than most sin-born. She was the one who waited with him while he sought Bear for the first time, for his first Gift. She was the one who, with the Shadow Lord who was Beta of his first pack, named him for a symbol of grievances set aside.
Which is not quite the same thing as peace.
From the beginning of his life as a Garou, which may as well have been the beginning of his life, words have filled the space where memories might have been. How to talk to the Black Furies in Montana who want to throat you for daring to come near their borders. How to talk to the Fenrir in Minnesota to make them listen to the prophecy you had to bring. How to talk to mortals, if you had to. How to talk to the sept in Louisiana and explain why you and your packmate entered the bawn brawling through the swamps, snapping at each other with fanged jaws. How to say what you mean. How to avoid saying what you mean. How to twist the truth, or the Litany, for one end or the other.
How to tell the truth when you're at your worst, when you have no reason left to do so, when it is the worst thing you could say and yet the only thing that can save you.
Hatchet has more experience relaying things by body language and silence than most homid-born Garou, but it still pales in comparison to his experience with talking. Endless, circular talking. Reasoning. Arguing. Debating. Questioning. Answering. He is expressive. He is clever. He is startlingly manipulative. He is, at times, so appallingly human that it's hard to reconcile with the sheer heat of rage that usually rises off of him. He is, at other times, foreign to both man and wolf, as though he has never quite learned to be either.
Not perfectly. Not intuitively. Not without effort. Constant, daily, unfuckingrelenting work.
Daniel's flattened ears lift up, and Hatchet cocks his head to the side, matching the tilt of the other Half Moon's. He cocks his brows as though in question, and Daniel answers.
Understood.
His brows lower. He straightens his neck. Whether Daniel is right or not -- whether Hatchet's guess as to what Daniel 'understands' or not is correct -- isn't spoken aloud. He turns to Charlie with a small nod, and the Theurge completes the cleansing. The banes lose some substance in the penumbra afterward, as though everything in them of the Wyrm is dissipating. They fade, become skeletal, become ghostlike, and then begin to vanish entirely. Hatchet watches.
When they're gone, he shifts -- albeit slowly -- back to hispo. A chuff, and a butt of his head against one packmate and then the other, and he once again takes the lead.
It's several blocks to go before they're done.
